The Operative: No One Lives Forever was released in 2000, in which the main character was a woman - a rarity in games until then - spy Cate Archer. The game is a mix between a first-person shooter in a stealth-based game: most (but not all) missions can be accomplished in several ways: sneak to avoid danger, use of gadgets, or simply with popping guns. The story of the game revolves around the secret organization Unity, which must preserve world peace. Agent Archer, a member of this organization, must thwart HARMs cunning plans. Set in the 1960s, the game features a lot of humor: it was once described as a mix of Austin Powers in James Bond with a main character very similar to The Avengers Emma Peel.
